The deceased was the eldest son of Aaron B. and Mary C. Long. At the age of 10 years he removed with his parents and brothers to the home farm in Center township, near Leon, where they lived until the fall of 1868, when the family located in Leon, his father building the brick building now occupied by the Exchange National Bank. John entered the Leon public schools, and graduated with the second class finishing the high school, June 7, 1872. (He gave an Oration on American Literature at the graduation exercise.) He continued actively in the store as clerk and assistant buyer until the fall of 1878, when he settled on the farm his father gave him and followed the pursuit of agriculture until his death.
He was united in marriage with Miss Ellen Gammon on November 7, 1878, who with four sons, Lorne, Jamie, Roy and Renan survive him, together with his five brothers, H.L., D.F., O.S., A.C., and G.A. Long.
He united with the Christian church at Leon in the year 1876 and continued for a number of years a faithful member, but became in measure an agnostic, but had spoken to the writer many times of the Creator of All, and hoped some time to be with "Him in whom we move and have our being." May God be merciful to him and blot our errors.
Funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday, September 9th, conducted by F.A. Gardner, interment being in the family lot in the Leon cemetery.
