Obituary from Wayne County Press July, 1972:

Arthur BARNARD, Sr., 88, Dies

Arthur Barnard, Sr., 88, former Wayne City livestock buyer, merchant and Wayne County Sheriff, died in Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Barnard, well known over Wayne County, had been in the hospital only two days. His condition began to deteriorate Monday and his family took him to Mt. Vernon.

His health had been comparatively good until the last three months, his family said. He was a life-long resident of the Wayne City area.

Funeral Services

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wayne City Baptist Church. Richardson's Funeral Home is in charge. Burial will be in Thomason's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Friday. His body will be at the church after 11 a.m. Saturday.

Mr. Barnard was born at Hickory Hill Township near Bailey Church on Nov. 16, 1883, the son of Sylvester and Catherine (Spicer) Barnard.

In 1905, he married Nancy Jones, who died the following year. He later married Carrie May Talbert, to whom he was married 58 years. Eight children were born to them, four of which died in infancy. She also preceded him in death.

Started Store

At the age of 19, he first started serving the public when he purchased a general store, A. Barnard Co. He operated the business for more than 35 years. However, livestock buying was his main interest.

Mr. Barnard served as Wayne County Sheriff from 1938 to 1942. He also served as a township supervisor.

He lived most of his life on a farm north of Wayne City but in recent years lived in a mobile home in Wayne City next to his daughter, Mrs. Leonard (Florence) Bullard.

The Survivors

Surviving him are three sons, Estel, Art, and Lavern, all of Wayne City; one daughter, Mrs. Leonard Bullard; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Orda Barnard, of Eldon College, N.C.; and one sister, Mrs. George Wilson, of Wayne City.
