Franklin News-Herald, Tue Aug 22 1950:
City and county authorities are investigating the death of Robert Austin Jr., 21, former serviceman, who was almost instantly killed by a bullet of small caliber while he was standing on the front porch of his home, 652 Atlantic Avenue at 4 pm yesterday. Dr. Maurice Dinberg of Oil City, county coroner, said the bullet apparently was a stray missile fired from the hillside across French Creek from the Austin home. Officers searched the hillside along the southern side of French Creek for evidence that might indicate the point from which the bullet was fired. There was nothing to indicate Austin was a victim of foul play.
Son of Robert E. and Daisy Beers Austin, Robert was born in Cooperstown Dec. 23, 1928.
He was inducted into the Army Aug. 4, 1948, served with the US occupation forces in Japan, and received the Army of Occupation Medal. He was honorably discharged Dec. 8, 1949. He had service in Company L National Guard. He attended the Atlantic Avenue United Brethren Church, and Sunday School there.
Surviving are his parents; brothers and sisters, Lawrence E. Austin, Lambert D. Austin, and Mrs. Albert McCandless of franklin, Mrs. Dorothy Beebe of Oil City, Mrs. Lillian Scannell of Franklin, Mrs. James Rhoades of Reno, Miss Helen Austin of Polk, June and Gloria Austin, at home.
Services will be at 3:30 pm Thursday in Buchanan Funeral Home with Rev. G. H. Conrad, his pastor, officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the graveside in Franklin Cemetery.
