MILLARD FILLMORE CRUBAUGH (1884)

Millard was born on July 14, 1884, at Downs, in McLean County, Illinois. He was the first of seven children of James Wilson and Emma Belle (Bowman) Crubaugh. He was a grandson of William and Beulah (Venerable) Crubaugh, and Jacob and Mary Ann "Polly" (Mozingo) Bowman. His siblings were Oscar Sherman, Florence Edna, Clara May, Leonard, Bertha Belle, and Dewey.
Sometime soon after the birth of Dewey, in September of 1898, Emma Belle ran away from home, completely deserting her husband and children. By then, Millard was fifteen years old. He was working as a laborer in a brickyard. Before long, he was on his own, and living away from home. He traveled about working at various jobs, as far away as California and Texas. Later, after he married and settled down, he had the reputation of one who had not missed much as a young man.
By the time he was 36, he was back living at Downs, but had a job which required him to travel from town to town in Illinois. It was during that period when he met his wife. She was a native of Bethany, Illinois, who was employed at an egg candling factory at Sullivan, Illinois. She and some of the other young girls, with whom she worked, would occasionally engage in the practice of writing their names, addresses, and telephone numbers on the eggs which they were inspecting. Millard discovered one of the eggs which had her name on it.
Millard and Lura Pearl Roney were married on September 29, 1920, at Sullivan, Illinois. Lura, born July 10, 1896, was a daughter of Azel Irvin and Martha "Mattie" Elizabeth (Walton) Roney. Her parents, also natives of Bethany, were born on 4-11-1875 and 8-7-1874, respectively. Her father died on November 12, 1939, and was buried at Bethany. Her mother, who remarried, died on June 16, 1951, at Oregon City, Oregon.
Not long after their marriage, Millard and Lura Pearl relocated to Peoria, Illinois, where they opened a restaurant. They operated it until near the end of the 1920's. It was "CRUBAUGH'S RESTAURANT". The name is still faintly visible on the marquee.
Millard then went to work for the Caterpillar Company as a Security Guard, where he remained for the balance of his working life. He was an avid sports fan, particularly baseball. Lura was a member of the Eagles Club. They attended various churches. Millard was a Democratic Precinct Committeeman.

There were three sons from their marriage: Millard Fillmore, Jr., better known as "Jerry"; Leonard Wayne, better known as "Bud"; and Gene Edison.

Millard Fillmore, Sr. died on August 21, 1950, at the age of 66 years, at Peoria. Interment took place in Peoria. He never saw or knew any of his grandchildren.

In her later years, Lura lived with her son, Jerry, and his family. She was one month shy of her 97th birthday when her death occurred on June 10, 1993, at Pinellas Park, Florida.

Updates: (not in book) Millard Fillmore Crubaugh had a brief relationship with Bessie Skidmore. They were married 5 Apr 1907 and had a daughter, Opal Crubaugh, born on 11 Aug 1907 and died 4 Oct 1907. Millard and Bessie parted shortly after the death of Opal.
