Donald L. Berndt, 71, longtime educator, of Waverly, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at his residence.
He was born March 30, 1940, near Waverly, son of Leonard P. and Ella Baggerly Berndt. He married Peggy Hunt on June 6, 1962, in Waverly, and she survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Kelly Edwards and husband Doug of Waverly and Micki Goebel and husband Ed of Harvel; one son, Donald L. Berndt II and companion Patty Kilby of Mechanicsburg; seven grandchildren, Mandy and Amber Armstrong of Waverly, Carl, Josie, Nathan and Shawn Goebel of Harvel and Valerie Bouillon of Mechanicsburg; one great-grandson, Lance Farley of Mechanicsburg; one sister; Norma Lacey of Jacksonville; one brother, Darrell Dean Berndt and wife Terry of Arlington, Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Roberta Sue Berndt; and one brother, Lawrence P. Berndt.
Donald was a 1958 graduate of Waverly High School. He was a graduate of Illinois College in Jacksonville, and continued on, receiving a Master's in Chemistry from Marquette University in Milwaukee. Donald taught at several schools including, Waverly, Beardstown, Springfield and Riverton, retiring in 2010. He loved coaching track at the Waverly High School and was responsible for organizing the Waverly Holiday Tournament each year. He was a member of the Waverly First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed woodworking but his greatest joy was his family and taking pictures of his grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Waverly First United Methodist Church in Waverly. Burial will be at Waverly East Cemetery.
