Kay graduated from Eben High School in 1942. After high school Kay worked at different jobs in the Upper Peninsula before moving to Detroit. While living in the Detroit area she worked at various manufacturing jobs during the war. She met her husband Edward after the war and had two sons. During her time in Detroit she had many friends and fun times on Fenton Avenue. Kay will always be remembered as a kind and caring soul always ready to help others. Kay moved to Marquette in 1991 with her husband Edward to be closer to her family.
Kay is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law and grandchildren; Kim and Barbara (Biallas) Salmela, Kevin and Kate (Kenny) Salmela; granddaughters Kirsten and Kaitlain, all of Marquette.
She was preceded in death by her parents Hjalmer and Amelia; husband Edward; brothers Alex, Toivo, Victor and Charles Alto; sisters Lempi Hillberg, Hilja Robinson, Meimi Rockwood and Ethel Niemi and infant twin sister Vivian.
Visitation for Kay will be held at the Fassbender Funeral Home in Marquette on Friday, February 8, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. Rev. David Van Kley will officiate services. Interment will take place in Park Cemetery following the service.
Her family would like to thank the many people who loved and cared for our mother and grandmother in her declining years.
Kay was deeply loved and will be dearly missed. Memorials may be directed to a charity of ones choice in Kay's memory.
