Bernard Oliver "Ben" Hanson was the oldest son of Ole C. Hanson and Karine Hanson. Ben moved with his family to Pelan, Roseau Co., MN when he was very small. Ben served in World War I. Then he returned to Minnesota.

On July 5, 1922 he married Grace S. Wollett. They had four children by late December of 1931: Bernard Oliver Hanson, Jr., Marjorie Ann (now Mrs. James Arthur Gundlach), Wallace Sanford, and Donald Richard Hanson.

On about October 1st, 1934, Ben accidentally set himself on fire while repairing his vehicle; he died on October 3, 1934. He left a very distraught widow and four young children. Ben was buried in the Hanson family plot at the Elm Park Cemetery, Baudette, MN. The children were taken in and raised by relatives. Grace died on April 12, 1944.
