Calma Swanson, 97, a resident of this area for at least 85 years, died early Saturday morning, July 27, 1996, at the home of daughter Dora Lundsten in Williams. She had resided there for more than 25 years. She slipped away after having been confined to her bed for many weeks.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 31, 1996 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Williams. Burial was in the Elm Park Cemetery beside her husband.
Calma Selina, a daughter of Ole and Carrie Hanson Hanson, was born on December 10, 1898 at Pelan, Minnesota. When she was barely a teenager the moved to Spooner (now East Baudette) shortly after the Fire of 1910 that had ravaged the area. She worked for a time at the Engler Sawmill in Spooner. On August 28, 1920, she and Frans Gustaf Swanson were married at Spooner and moved to his homestead in the Bankton area of what was still Beltrami County.
In the 1937 Resettlement, the Swanson relocated to Williams which had remained Calma's home for almost 60 years. Following her husband's death in 1970, Calma moved into her daughter's home where she had lived since. They shared household duties for many years. Calma remained alert and active through almost all of her life.
Surviving in addition to Dora are a granddaughter; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Clarence (Gertrude) Hanson of Indianapolis and Leon (Florence) Hanson of Baudette; and a sister Sylvia (Mrs Albin) Anderson, also of Baudette. Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were daughters Alice Swanson and Frances Brottlund; a grandaughter, Kristine Gaynor; brothers Ben, Ralph, Carl, and Stephen (who died in infancy); and sisters Helen Forsman and Evelyn Woolett.
