On 29 June 1899, Mary L (Sade) Clark had given birth to a daughter called Verna Lucretia. Mary L. was past forty years 40 years old, and she developed complications, and hemorrhaged badly. Not even the two doctors residing in the area were able to offer much help. With the promise to her dying mother to raise her newborn sister proper, Lydia (Clark) Edwards was handed Verna Lucretia.
On 30 June 1899, Mary L. died and was buried beside her son, Riley in the Rusk Cemetery, which is located on the edge of the Clark homestead. A large stone marks her resting-place.
