OBITUARY Iron River Reporter Nov 12 1935 “Mrs. A. Johnson Dies At Home: Resident of the District For 53 Years”
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon for Mrs. Caroline Johnson of Ice Lake, who rode a wagon into Iron county 53 years ago, before the railroads had opened the district to less intrepid settlers. She was 80 years old.
A service will be conducted at the home at 1:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon and at the First Lutheran church at 2 o’clock by the Rev. Charles W. Erickson. Burial will be in Resthaven cemetery.
It was March 30, 1882, when Mrs. Johnson, her husband, and her two oldest boys, one of whom she carried in a washtub, arrived in Iron River. They lived for a time in a roofless shack behind the present Piper house, but soon took a homestead on section three in Stambaugh township. The farm was not satisfactory and a little later they acquired a “canal” homestead in the Iron lake district. In 1900 they moved to the home on the shores of Ice lake. In 1925 they retired from active farming and turned over operation of their dairy business to their sons, Robert and John Johnson.
Mrs. Johnson was born April 23, 1855, in Skogelund Hjulsjo, Sweden. On December 28, 1876 she was married to August Johnson. Five years later they left their native country for the United States, arriving in Florence in 1881. The next year they moved to Iron River.
Surviving Mrs. Johnson are her husband, August; five daughters, Mrs. Annie Krans, Mrs. Mary Johnson, and Mrs. Hulda Erickson of Iron River, Mrs. Maggie Olson of Hibbing, Minn., and Mrs. Edna Miller of Oldwink, New Jersey; six sons, Fred of Eatonville, Wash., Walter of Two Rivers, Wis., Andrew, Robert, Charles, and John of Iron River; two sisters, Mrs. Hilda Erickson of Saxon, Wis. and a sister in Sweden; 34 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
Six of the grandchildren will be pall bearers at the funeral service tomorrow.
