OBITUARY Iron River Reporter Aug 4 1925 "Skull Fracture Caused By Fall From Pole Fatal: Hjalmer Johnson, Electrician, Dies As Result of Injuries In Fall"
His skull fractured early Monday morning by a fall from a thirty foot pole, Hjalmer Johnson, proprietor of the Iron River Electric Shop, died at the Verona hospital at 3 o'clock Monday following an operation by Drs. L.E. Bovik of Crystal Falls and L.E. Irvine of Iron River.
Johnson had been engaged in an alley at the rear of Selin's store and had finished stringing fire alarm system wires to the top of the pole when he lost his balance and fell ten feet to the roof of a barn below, then rolled and fell twenty feet further to the ground. He laid there several minutes until Dr. Irvine arrived, and was hurried under the doctor's orders to the Verona hospital where an examination revealed a serious basal skull fracture.
According to Mrs. Johnson's wishes, Dr. Bovik was summoned and an operation was performed at 1 o'clock. He showed a slight rally but died at 3 o'clock without regaining consciousness.
BOUGHT STORE INTEREST Two years ago Mr. Johnson purchased an interest in the Iron River Electric shop, then owned by William Mitchell, and later purchased the entire rights to the shop. Previous to that time he had been engaged as electrician by the Iron Range Light & Power Co. and at the Bengal mine.
In 1921 and 1922 he held the office of the supervisor of Bates township and one time was elected to the office of clerk. While supervisor he was removed from office by the governor on petition of the Iron County Taxpayers' Association for official misconduct, but the unpopularity of the action was attested by the voters' immediate choice of his wife for a successor.
He possessed a fiery nature, ready at all times to fight for his rights and the rights of his townspeople, and this characteristic made him popular and widely known.
He was born in Iron River on May 30, 1892 and on June 24 eleven years ago married Anna LeClair of Florence at Gaastra. Three sons, Lloyd, Hjalmer jr. and Cecil Claire, and two daughters, Kathleen and Carole Marie, survive besides a wife and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Johnson.
Funeral arrangements were uncertain this morning except that the services will be held in the Swedish Lutheran church.

FUNERAL NOTICE Iron River Reporter Aug 7 1925 "Hundreds Attend Johnson Funeral: Popular Man Who Lost Life In Fall Is Interred At Services Yesterday"
Hundreds of friends and relatives of Hjalmar Johnson, who lost his life Monday in a fall from a telephone pole, were in attendance at his funeral yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Charles W. Erickson, pastor of the First Lutheran church, officiating.
Following service at the home at Ice Lake where the body lay, the long funeral cortege of mourners wended its way to Iron River cemetery [note: buried Resthaven] where last rites were performed.
Simple were the ceremonies, but impressive. In the room where numerous floral offerings were banked about the casket, a short service was held with special music. "Beautiful Tale of Somewhere" was sung by Miss Margarite Aronson, and "I Love to Think of the Heavenly Land" was sung by Mrs. Ed Carlson, accompanied by Miss Matilda Nolingberg on the piano.
Friends who had known the deceased in life carried him in death: Messrs. M.E. Oberg, John Corlett, A. Watts, J.H. Harding, Walter Koons, and Sever Karvala.
Following are the relatives present at the funeral: Mrs. Myron Huff and children Lawrence and Lenore of Puritan, Mich.; Mrs. James Pontbriand of Florence, Wis.; Mrs. Joseph Goffette of Central Falls, Rhode Island; Joseph St. Onge of Puritan, Mich.; A.M.
