OBITUARY Iron River Reporter Jan 13 1933 "Andrew Saxon Is Taken By Death: Iron River Pioneer Dies At Home of Daughter This Morning"
Andrew Saxon, 75, Iron River pioneer who had made this district his home since 1888, died this morning at 4:10 o'clock at the home of his daughter Mrs. Henry Perry, 1131 Second avenue. Death came after an illness of long duration.
Mr. Saxon was born in Sweden on April 3, 1857 and came to this country at the age of 30, settling first in Iron River, where he worked in the mines. After a few years spent in mining, he moved to the Beechwood district and there established one of the pioneer farms of this section. At intervals he continued to work in the mines.
Sixteen years ago he retired from the farm and he and Mrs. Saxon returned to Iron River to make their home here. Mrs. Saxon preceded her husband in death six years ago.
After moving to Iron River Mr. Saxon worked as flagman on the Fourth street crossing for the Northwestern railroad for several years and later was employed as janitor at the Homer school. He worked there for six years until he was forced to resign his position last April because of illness.
He is survived by four sons, Charles of Iron Mountain, John of Escanaba, and Robert and Rudolph of Iron River; four daughters, Mrs. William Harrington of Flint, Mrs. Floyd VanWagner, Mrs. H.C. Larson and Mrs. Henry Perry, all of Iron River; two sisters, Mrs. Hilda Erickson of Saxon, Wis. and Mrs. August Johnson of Ice Lake; and 27 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at the Swedish Mission church in Stambaugh, of which he had been a faithful member for many years. The Rev. Robert Sturdy will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven cemetery.

In the woods between Bridsons (which was P.O. Greenlund) and Dad [Frank Nyren]'s farm was a cabin built by the Menominee Indians who lived in this cabin. The Indian trail was below Saxons, which is Hedstrom's farm, and came out on top of Elmleaf's hill which met the Old Beechwood road going to Iron River where the playground now is. The Indians would lie across the road on top of Elmleaf's hill and wouldn't get off the road until they were given something by passersby. Dad treated snuff. The Indians moved to Shawano, Wisconsin. Often my father and I would go hunting partridge by the old one room shack the Indians lived in. Moilanens went to the Benson School and later lived in that cold Indian cabin.
