Our beloved father, Elgene "Gene" A. Achord Sr., 89, passed away at 4:45 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at Ollie Steele Burden Manor Nursing Home. He was born in Baton Rouge on Dec. 11, 1919. A devoted husband for 62 years, he married his high school sweetheart, Jewell Braud. He served with honor in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the destroyer USS Haynsworth. He was an ExxonMobil Chemical Plant retiree with more than 40 years of service. He was an outdoorsman who loved to fish. He coached baseball and was involved with the American Legion Baseball program and the Baton Rouge Baseball Clinic. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and an usher at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church. Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Jewell Braud Achord; parents, Gertrude Thibodeaux Achord and Chester Arthur Achord Sr.; sister, Verna Raborn; brothers, Lester Achord and Jerome "Jake" Achord. He is survived by his brothers, Leighton Achord and Chester Achord; children, daughter, Jan Achord Olivier; and sons, Gene Achord Jr., Jack Achord and Jimmy Achord; grandchildren, Scott Achord, Rhonda Achord, Kyle Achord, Kristi Olivier, Brent Achord, Kerri Olivier, Patrick Achord, Danielle Crochet, Robbie Olivier, Derek Achord and Darren Achord; great-grandchildren, Johnathon Achord, Gannon Achord, Seth Achord, Leah Achord, Ian Achord, Allyson Achord, Riley Galante, Josie Achord, Bryce Olivier, Katie Crochet, Austin Achord, Brayden Galante, Kyler Crochet, Mary Blake Achord and Michael Mouch. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a rosary service at 6:30 p.m. Visiting at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church, on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until religious service at noon, conducted by the Rev. Jack Nutter. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Kyle Achord, Brent Achord, Patrick Achord, Robbie Olivier, Derek Achord and Darren Achord. We have been blessed to have a father whom we admired and respected. He was known for his candor and quick wit. He was a courageous man with a strong sense of family and faith, and we will never forget him.
