Leighton Achord "Mop Top" A retired Exxon USA employee of 33 years and a native and resident of Baton Rouge, he died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at Golden Age Nursing Home. He was 91 and a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Friday, Aug. 14, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visiting resumes on Saturday from 2 p.m. until the religious service at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel conducted by Deacon Phil Bejeaux. Entombment in Greenoaks Memorial Park Mausoleum. Survived by three daughters, Pat Achord, of Abbeville, Barbara Wilson and husband Richard, of Central, and Debby Cantu and husband John, of Denham Springs; a son, Wayne Achord and wife Shirley, of West, Miss.; a brother, Chester Achord; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife, Helen Duczer Achord; parents, Chester and Gertrude Achord; a son, Lawrence Achord; a sister, Verna Rayborn; three brothers, Elgene, Lester and Jerome "Jake" Achord; and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, an avid LSU fan, fisherman, hunter and rose garden enthusiast. Special thanks to the staff of Golden Age Nursing Home, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and Generations Hospice for their care and support. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.
