Glenn E. Lucas

Glenn E. Lucas, age 76, of Marion, died on Monday, Sept. 3, 2007, at the Riverside Methodist Hospital. He was born in Marion County on Feb. 26, 1931, the son of the late Virgil and Helen Van-Tyne Gillis Lucas. Glenn graduated from the Marion Harding High School in the Class of 1949.
Shortly following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines and served as a radio communications technician during the Korean Conflict. On Oct. 18, 1953, Glenn married his loving wife of over 53 years, Clara Mae Montgomery Lucas, in Marion. She preceded him in death on July 20, 2007. Together they tended a garden that stretched 4 acres and they planted "enough of everything for everyone." A lifelong resident of Marion, Glenn worked for Marion Rural Electric as its general manager for 31 years, from 1964 until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of the New Bloomington United Methodist Church, where he served as president of the board of trustees. Glenn was the former chairman of the board of Buckeye Power Inc. He was past president of the New Bloomington Town Council and the Town and Country Kiwanis Group of which he was active in their Big Brother programs. He was past master of the F. & A.M. Lodge 463 in LaRue and a volunteer firefighter in New Bloomington. A gifted violinist, Glenn gathered his own orchestra and named them the Glenn Lucas Orchestra, and they would play in all of the gigs around town with a show every Saturday night and New Year's Eve. An avid fisherman, Glenn loved to go to Lake Erie or Fletcher's Pond to fish with his wife Clara and sometimes his brother John. If he wasn't fishing, he could often be found walking, going on as many as five walks a day. With a servant's heart, Glenn would do anything for anyone and often went out of his way to help without thinking twice. For many years, his many family and friends knew they could turn to him to repair their broken televisions and radios, which he did from his own home. Many words come to mind when he is thought of: "brilliant," "a good ole boy," and for many reasons he will be dearly missed. Left to cherish his memory are his six children, David Lucas of Marion, Daniel (Brenda) Lucas of Marion, Sandra (Bruce) Thaxton of Kenton, James Lucas of Delaware, Steven (Pam) Lucas of Marion, and Cheryl (James) Corbin of Marion; eight grandchildren, Christopher (Susan) Thaxton, Andrew (Coli) Lucas, Derek Lucas, Whitney Lucas, Tyler Thaxton, Molly Lucas, Caitlyn Corbin, and Zachary Corbin; three great-grandchildren, Steven and Amanda Hardesty, and Braedon Lucas; three brothers, Robert (Janet) Lucas of Marion, John (Sandy) Lucas, and Delmar (Linda) Lucas, sister-in-law, Mary Alice Lucas, all of Marion; and one sister, Marjorie (Richard) Porter of Green Camp. Including his wife and parents, Glenn was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Pamela Lynn Lucas; two brothers, Allen and Richard Lucas; and one sister, Eleanor Hinamon. His family will greet friends on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion, with masonic services following at 5:15 p.m. Funeral services will be held there on Monday at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Chris Wiseman officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council will follow in Grand Prairie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Bloomington United Methodist Church, 2540 Agosta Meeker Road N., New Bloomington, OH 43341.
