William R. "Dick" Lucas, 82, of Marion died Friday morning, August 31, 2007 at the Marion General Hospital. He was born on December 26, 1924 in Marion, Ohio the son of the late Virgil Verne and Helen V. (Gillis) Lucas. A Marion resident his entire life he was a graduate of Harding High School in the class of 1942. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army serving during World War II. Once he returned to Marion he met and married his loving wife Mary Alice Linn on March 26, 1950. They have spent 57 wonderful years together as husband and wife. Shortly thereafter he began his employment with Eaton Corporation, Forge Division. While employed there he worked as a Hot Forge Inspector until his retirement in 1986. He and his father also ran Lucas & Lucas Field Tile: Installing drainage tiles for farmers around Marion County. Dick was a very important member of the Mount Vernon Avenue Church of Christ; serving as a trustee. His greatest loves were playing cards and fishing; whether it was in Ohio, Canada, or vacationing in Black Lake, Michigan he was the happiest reeling in a Blue Gill, Perch, or his favorite, Walleye. He loved spending time outdoors, especially in the woods on their property. Dick's family will remember him as a "loving, caring, devoted, father; the best there was". His daughter Carol said "if I become half the person he was, I'll have done okay". He had a great sense of humor, joking right to the end. He will be missed by his wife Mary Alice; three children Carol A. Lucas, Michael R. (Nina J.) Lucas, and Debbie K. Lucas Hamilton all of Marion; 5 grandchildren Eric (Betsy) Johnson, Brian Johnson, Connie Lucas, Corey Hamilton, Judy (Doug) Lucas Bowling; 1 great grandchild Sabrina Johnson; 1 step great grandchild Hannah N. Bowling; 5 siblings Robert (Janet) Lucas of Marion, Glenn Lucas of Marion, John (Sandy) Lucas of Marion, Marjorie (Richard) Porter of Green Camp, and Delmar "Bill" (Linda) Lucas. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Allen Lucas; sister Eleanor Hinamon; and his sister-in-law Clara Mae Lucas. Friends may call on the family on Tuesday September 4, 2007 from 4-7 p.m. at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 East Center Street, Marion. Services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Mount Vernon Avenue Church of Christ, 947 Mount Vernon Avenue, Marion with Pastor Phil Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Grand Prairie Cemetery. Memorial contributions if desired may be made to the church. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.snyderfuneralhomes.
