Family Bible Records and some military documents confirm the birth date as 2 Apr 1810. He moved from Sumter to Montgomery AL where he was a plantation overseer (1830 census). Between 1 Feb and 27 May 1836, Private in Captain Nott's Company (Montgomery Blues/True Blues), Alabama Volunteers during Florida Seminole Indian Wars. In Mid March 1836 they built Fort Alabama on the Hillsborough River about 14-24 miles from Fort Brooke at Tampa Bay. On 22 Mar 1836 Notts and Bonham's company relieved the Louisiana Vols at Fort Alabama. At the end of April the Fort was ordered destroyed and the Volunteers to return home. On 27 Apr 1836 during the trip back to Fort Brooke, they were attacked by a force of about 300 indians. Their losses were 3 killed and 22 wounded. After the war James moved back to Sumter SC and married Celia E Bowick on 1 Apr 1838. After the death of Celia (1847), James married Laura Loretta Mitchum on 2 Jul 1848 and moved the family to what was then Pike County AL by wagon around 1849. His primary occupation was farming. Around 1851-1853 he owned 40 acres (land grant for the war) of T8N R18E Sec 1. Laura received a land grant for 160 Acres in 1891 after his death for property in T8 R18E Sec 34. Another land grant was approved in 1897 for 80 acres in T8 R18E Sec 23. James was described as 5ft 6in, blue eyes, light hair, and fair complextion.
