According to his military information and the James Alfred Johnson Family Bible Record of Births, William was born on 31 Oct 1840 at Sumterville, Sumter District, South Carolina. His family moved to what was then Pike County AL around 1849. He enlisted at Montgomery as a Private in Loomis' Company B of the 1st Batt. Ala Inf on 7 Sep 1861. The 1st Batt and 6th Batt (McClellan's) was consolidated into the 25th Ala. Inf in December 1861. Due to a camp wide sickness, He spent time in the Mobile Hospital in Nov 1861. On 31 Dec 1862 he was wounded in the neck at Murfreesboro and was listed on the casualty list until around 3 Jan 1863. His brother Sherod Robert Johnson died from his wounds received at Murfreesboro. On 25 Nov 1863 William was captured at Missionary Ridge and sent to Chattanooga. He was forwarded to New Orleans on 25 May 1865 for exchange but was paroled and discharged on 27 May 1865 at Vicksburg.

William was the son of James Alfred Johnson and Celia E Bowick. William married Ellen Elvira Compton on 27 Nov 1866 in Brantley, Crenshaw Co., AL and had eleven children.
