Susan was the eighth of eleven children, and youngest daughter, born to Asa Cole and Anna Goldsmith of Westmoreland, New Hampshire. She was married first in Littleton, Mass. on 21 June 1831 to Elihu Whitcomb (20 Nov 1802-3 Mar 1833), the son of Josiah Whitcomb and Sally Hills. Elihu died within two years of their marriage, after which Susan had a long widowhood. She was married a second time in Rindge, NH on 22 May 1860 to Orin Pitkin. Her marriage date is also given as 1 April, but this may be a license date. She appears with her second husband and several children on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses in Montpelier, Vermont. Most of the children were her husband's by his previous marriage, but they had at least one child together, Charles C. Pitkin, born about 1854.
