Left fatherless as an infant, Charles was sent to live with various people until old enough to join his older brother at sea. He was a mariner his entire adult life. He married in Rindge, NH on 17 March 1846 Caroline G. Cutler. During his final voyage he was injured by a whale that was staving his boat. He died from his injuries and was buried at sea near Christmas Island. He and his wife had two children, Richard G., born and died 14 April 1847; and Charles Ward, born 23 October 1848. Following his death, his widow married in 1855 the surgeon, Dr. Edmund Seyffarth of Altenberg, Germany.
