Benjamin's father died when he was 17, and a year or two after that he went to West Point, NY where he worked in the shipping business. He owned and operated a craft that he used to shuttle goods from New York City upriver. In 1821 he married Adeline Sherwood, born 9 Jan 1806. His health failed him when he was 50, and he then moved to the warm climate of the isthmus of Panama. He soon caught a fever and died in Chargres in 1850. His widow died in Brooklyn, NY on 1 June 1852. He and his wife had ten children.
