John was the son of Asa and Anna (Goldsmith) Cole. He spent much of his life as a mariner, being master or owner of several vessels. He was married first to Elizabeth Shaw, who died of consumption on 13 April 1843. On 9 October 1845 he was married to Mary Wells of Wetmoreland. He died of apoplexy (stroke).
