Paris News – February 29, 1948 – Veteran of 50 Years Railroad Service Dies at Age 80

Oscar W. Howard, 80, N. 125 N. Main, Veteran of 50 Years of Service with the Frisco Railroad before his retirement Dec. 31, 1937 died at St. Joseph’s Hospital Saturday at 5 P.M.

From the time he was 20 until he retired at 70, Mr. Howard traveled some 3,805,680 miles between Paris and Monett, Missouri, his only run.

Mr. Howard never missed a payday and 15 days was the longest period he missed work. His work record was compiled despite three accidents. While still a young man, he fell into a coal car and the fireman accidentally hit his foot with a pick. Another accident on his train occurred when a boy put a spike on the rail. The engineer was killed in this accident. The third accident was also caused by a spike, this time placed by two boys and resulting in the death of the fireman.

Mr. Howard’s first duty was brakeman on a passenger train. After three years he was transferred to a freight train and seven years later made conductor of a passenger train. He remained on this job for 40 years. His run was 303 miles long and he made about 10 round trips a month.

During the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Mr. Howard handled his longest train – 15 coaches.

Mr. Howard was chief of the Order of Railroad Conductors for 22 years. He was a member of all orders of the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Frisco Hospital Association.

Mr. Howard was born Oct 1, 1867 at Spenser, Indiana, son of Charles W. Howard and the former Amanda Raper. He moved with his parents to Missouri from Indiana about 1882, then in 1885 to Jack Co., Texas and to Paris in 1887. Mr. Howard was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mattie Bell Deatherage last year. They were married in Paris in 1891. He is survived by six sons: Earl, Fayetteville, Arkansas; Gordon, Monett, Missouri; Elwyn, Tulsa, Oklahoma; George, Hal, Jack, two daughters, Margaret and Mary, Paris.
