THE PARIS NEWS, Thursday, August 9, 1928: Charles W. Howard, 86 years of age, passed away Wednesday afternoon at the home of his son, Edgar Howard, on North Fifteenth St. Mr. Howard was a pioneer settler in the plains country of Texas. He has made his home here since 1907. Mr. Howard was born in Smithville, Monroe Co., Indiana, on December 25, 1842. His early years were spent in that state. At the outbreak of the Civil war he entered the Union Army as a volunteer, serving for three full years in Company B the Fiftieth Infantry. On May 25, 1865, Mr. Howard married Miss Amanda E. Raper in Whitehall, Indiana. In 1882, Mr. Howard and his family moved to Missouri and three years later they moved to Texas, settling in Jack County. They moved from Jack County into the plains country in 1892, becoming pioneer settlers of the section. Mr. Howard was a devoted member of the church of Christ, joining the church in 1880 in Spencer, Indiana. Mr. Howard is survived by his wife and six sons. His sons, three of whom live in Paris and are well known here are, O. W. Howard, Frank Howard and Edgar Howard, Paris; T. E. Howard, Charlotte, N. C.; J. W. Howard, Floydada, Texas; and Homer Howard of Lockney, Texas. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Luela and a son, Edwin LeRoy. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Emberson and Brown chapel, conducted by Robert Cook, minister of the West Paris Church of Christ. The six sons will act as pallbearers. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery.
