A. Raymond Eppley, 74, Plainfield, died Friday afternoon at the Swaim Health Center, Newville.

He was born Oct. 18, 1903 in Middlesex Township. Mr. Eppley was a teacher in the public schools of Cumberland County from 1926 to 1943 and was later employed a Mechanicsburg Naval Depot and the Army War College. He was also a principal of the Scotland Elementary School and retired in 1969. A 1926 graduate of Shippensburg Normal School, he received a BS in education from Shippensburg State College in 1940 and a MS in education from Pennsylvania State University in 1956.

He was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Plainfield, where he was a teacher in the Senior Men's Sunday School class. He was a member and tyler of Cumberland Star Lodge No. 197, F and AM, a member and tyler of St. John's Arch Chapter 172, member and past tyler of St. Johns Council 5, member and tyler of St. John's Commandery No. 8, and member of the Harrisburg Scottish Rite Consistory, Zembo Shrine Temple and the Cumberland County Shrine.

He was a past president of the Carlisle Fish and Game Association, a member of the Williams Grove Steam Engine association (sic), MORA Club of Carlisle, Senior Citizens of Carlisle, Cumberland County Historical Society and Hamilton Library Association, and was active with Boy Scout Troop 172, Plainfield. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers Association, National Assn. of Retired Federal Employes (sic), American Assn. of Retired Persons and Penn State Alumni Association,

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Nelson Eppley; two sons, John W., 112 Sycamore St., Mount Holly Springs; and Harvey N., RD2 Carlisle; a daughter, Marian A. Battista, 335 Hilldale Ave., Lewistown; two brothers, Charles E., 13 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, and Clarence A., 1211 E. Cumberland Road, Harrisburg; a half-sister, Elizabeth L. Williams, 829 N. West St., Carlisle and seven grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the G. Book Roth Funeral Home, Walnut Bottom Road and Belvedere St. with the Rev. Richard B. Marshall officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home where a Masonic memorial service will be held at 7.
