Bertha Laura Valentine was born August 15, 1884, near Rocky Ridge, Frederick County, Maryland, the daughter of Elias Frederick and Anna Maria Wetzel Valentine. On November 15, 1906, in Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland, she married James Franklin Shriner, son of Joseph Filmore and Laura Eveline Eyler Shriner. They were the parents of 5 children: Luella Marie, Viola Laura, Mildred Irene, Mehrle Franklin and Frances Elsie Shriner. Bertha passed away on January 19, 1963, in Frederick, Frederick County, Maryland, and was buried on the 22nd in Mt. Tabor Church Cemetery, Rocky Ridge.

Obituary for Bertha Laura Valentine Shriner from the Frederick Post of Monday, January 21, 1963:

"Mrs. James F. Shriner. Mrs. Bertha E. Shriner, 78, widow of James F. Shriner, Thurmont, died Saturday at 8 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for several days. She was born near Rocky Ridge, a daughter of the late Elias and Maria Wetzel Valentine. Her husband died 13 years ago. She was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church at Rocky Ridge. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Raymond Miller, Mrs. George Clabaugh, and Merhle, Thurmont; Mrs. Melvin Clabaugh, Ladiesburg; Mrs. Scott McNair, Emmitsburg; 16 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. The body is at the M. L. Creager and Son Funeral Home in Thurmont, where friends may call. It will be taken to the Mt. Tabor church at Rocky Ridge Tuesday at 1 p.m. for services there at 2 p.m. Rev. Donald Brake will officiate, and interment will be in the church cemetery."
