"Mrs Virginia Lafayette Nelson, wife of Dr. Robert W. Nelson and grand-daughter of Gen. Thomas Nelson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, died in Charlottesville Wednesday after an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Nelson was nearly seventy-three years of age and was born in Hanover county. The youngest child of Capt. Thomas Nelson and wife, Judith, who was the youngest child of General Thomas Nelson. Mrs. Nelson's name was given her in honor of the Marquis De Lafayette, who, out of respect for the child's grandfather, was present at her christening durings his visit to this country in 1824. She married in 1844 her cousin, Robert William Nelson, who had just graduated at the University of Virginia. She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, Dr. Robert W. Nelson, her children, Dr. Hugh T. Nelson, Misses Susan and Eliza Nelson, of this city; Messrs. Robert Nelson, of Patton, Ala., and william Nelson, of Guatemala and many kinsfolk, among whom is the author, Thomas Nelson Page." (The Norfolk Virginia, Mar 19, 1897, Page 6)
