Dr. Hugh Thomas Nelson, first child of Robert William and Virginia LaFayette Nelson, was born at Kinloch, Albemarle Co., Va. He married Polly James Gilliam at Buena Vista, Powhatan Co., Va., on July 13, 1871. His career as a Confederate soldier was an eventful one, he has served as a private in the Morris Artillery of Hanover Co. After an illness in the hospital, he was detained as a courier. While serving as a courier, it became his duty to carry to President Davis, at Danville, the first tidings to the surrender of the army of Northern Virginia. He was present without the building where the last cabinet meeting of the Confederate States government was hold. Following the war he spent several years at Washington College, Lexington, Va., now Washington and Lee, under the presidency of General Robert E. Lee.
