Dr. Robert William Nelson, youngest child of Honorable Hugh Nelson, of Belvoir, Albemarle Co., fifth son and child of Governor Thomas Nelson, of Yorktown, York County, Va., and Lucy Grymes, his wife, was born 1822, at Belvoir, Albemarle Co., VA He married in 1844, his first cousin, Virginia LaFayette Nelson, daughter of Captain Thomas Nelson, of Oakland, Hanover Co., Va. He graduated in Medicine from Jefferson College, Philadelphia, in 1846, and practiced for several years in Powhatan County, Virginia. He later moved to Charlottesville, Va., where he was in active practice until his death in 1908. He was Surgeon to Powhatan Troops during the Civil War and accompanied this famous organization in many of its battles. For many years he was Health Officer of the City of Charlottesville, Va., and rendered notable service. He was at one time Vice President of the Medical Society of Virginia. He was a member of the Albemarle Medical Society and American Medical Association. He was a Mason and for many years Vestryman of Christ Episcopal Church in Charlottesville.
