Kjersti Larsdtr was born on February 6, 1837 at Hvinden farm, near Gran, Norway. She was the tenth child of Lars Torstensen and Mari Carlsdtr. She was baptized at the Gran Sister Churches on February 26, 1837 and confirmed there in 1851.

On April 10, 1860 she married Erick Hansen at Gran. They moved into a cotter's place on the Haugtvedt farm - and adopted Haugtvedt as their last name as was the custom. Children born in Norway included Hans, Lars, Syver, and Mari.

In late April, 1871 the family boarded the sailing ship "Anna Delius" bound for Quebec, arriving on June 6, 1871. Then they would have taken a train to Fillmore Co., MN to join other family members who had settled near Elstad. Shortly after they arrived, Caroline was born, followed by Thorvald in 1873. Then tragedy struck. On February 7, 1874 Kjersti died of "taring" (tuberculosis). She left behind a widower and six young children. According to the Elstad church records, she was buried in the Elstad Lutheran Church Cemetery on March 1, 1874. Unfortunately no tombstone marks the location of her grave.
