Thorvald Erickson Haugtvedt was born on August 28, 1873 in rural Fillmore County, MN to recent emigrants from Gran, Norway Erick Hanson and Kjersti Larsdatter Haugtvedt. Thorvald was baptized on 19 October, 1873 at Elstad Lutheran Church. After his mother died on February 7, 1874, his father moved the family, that included 6 young children (Hans, Lars, Syver, Mary, Caroline, and Thorvald), to Tansem Township, Clay Co., MN - not far from Norwegian Grove, MN. On November 13, 1880 Thorvald's father married Anne Bakke Tucker, a widow with several children. Thorwald grew up as the youngest child in this large family.

On August 3, 1903 Thorwald married Caroline Mathilda Evensdtr Karlstad at North Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple had had 6 children by January of 1912. On March 5, 1912 Thorvald succumbed to tuberculosis. He is buried at N. Immanuel West Cemetery, probably near his infant son Lewis who died in 1911. No tombstone marks the grave.
