Lars Erickson Haugtvedt was born on September 11, 1862 at Haugtvedthagen farm, near Gran, Norway. His parents were Erick Hanson and Kjersti Larsdtr Haugtvedt. In late April of 1871 Lars, his parents and siblings left for America. They settled for a few years near Elstad Lutheran Church in rural Fillmore County, MN.
By 1880, his father Erick (now widowed) had moved his family of 6 young children to Tansem Township, near Norwegian Grove, MN. This area, where many close relatives were homesteading, was where Lars grew up. On November 20, 1888 Lars married his first cousin Ingeborg Jensdtr Haugtvedt. The couple settled on a farm in Tansem Township and raised a large family there.
Funeral services were held September 28th at the North Immanuel Church, with burial in the North Immanuel West Cemetery. Survivors included his wife of over 61years, Ingeborg, and the following children: Christine (Mrs. Edward) Evenson and Luella (Mrs. Anton) Johnson of Pelican Rapids, Melvin of Oklee; Ingvald of Barnesville; Hans Adolph of Kindred, ND; and Carl on a farm near Barnesville. One son Carl Alfred, died in infancy, and a daughter, Emma (Mrs. Paul Hanson), passed away in 1947.
