Funeral services for Mrs. Irene Wilson, who died Monday in La Crosse, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, La Crosse. There will be a rosary hour at 8 o'clock tonight at the Hoover-Pittman Funeral Home, La Crosse.

Birth date is most likely one year earlier than shown on headstone. Barbara I. Befort is listed as 3 months old (3/12 year) in the 1930 census that was taken on April 7, 1930. Her birth date is listed as 13 Dec. 1929 at the following family genealogy link:

With this earlier birth date her age at the 1930 census taking would be 3 months, 25 days. Twin brothers were born in October of 1931, only 10 months after the Dec. 1930 date, making Dec. 13, 1929 much more plausible.

I suspect that the incorrect year arose because someone knew her age (35) at death and subtracted that from the year (1965) to get 1930, neglecting to account for the birth date being later in the year than the date of death.

My suggestion is to add a comment in the bio to the effect that family and government sources indicate her actual birth date is 13 December 1929.

Congratulations on the identification of so many Volga Germans. My father was born in Kansas of German immigrants, but from the area near Oldenburg and Holland.
