Alton Newspapers Hayner Library Newspaper Archive - 1947 July 14 Mrs. M. Smith, 59, Dies; Was Long Ill - Mrs. Mary Viola Smith, 59, wife of J. (Smltty) Smith, cashier of the Railway Express Agency, died at 2:20 a. m., Sunday, at her home, 639-A East Fourth, following an extended period of ill health. During the past eight months she had been hospitalized at two different times and his returned home from Alton Memorial Hospital last June 11. She was born Feb. 29, 1888, at Rockbridge, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Reno. She had resided in Alton for 35 years and during nearly' all of her 25 years of married life had been In the East Fourth street neighborhood Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, William Paul, Alton; two sisters, Mrs. Glendola Whlttlco, and Mrs. Sanford Alexander, Jerseyville, and two brothers, William Otis, St. Louis, and Edgar Reno, Jerseyville. Funeral rites will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p. m., In Staten funeral home by the Rev. B, Maston, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Jerseyville. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p. m., today.

Burial was in Oakwood cemetery. Mrs. Austin Cope and Mrs. Lessie Johnson, with Miss Joan Kibler as accompanist, sang. Pallbearers were Walter Shade, Herschel L. Ele, Rex Craddock, Elmer Richey, Oscar Bremmer, and Anthony Ventimiglia
