Confederate Soldier; Place of burial C129 of the Cemetery Index for Oconee County, SC

Richard Lewis, Master of Equity and Judge of Probate of Oconee County, committed suicide in his office at Walhalla today by shooting himself through the heart with a pistol.
Judge Lewis has held the two offices above mentioned for many years and was one of the popular men in the county. He entered the Confederate Army when but fifteen years old and at sixteen was promoted to Lieutenant for bravery on the field. In Colonel Walker's Infantry, Bratton's Brigade, Longstreet's Corps, he lost a leg and was otherwise terribly wounded.
Continuous suffering and prostration of the nervous system is the supposed cause of his suicide.

Suggested edit: After his first wife, Olivia "Kate" Lawrence (Lewis) died in 1887, Richard married for a second time in 1891 to another woman named "Kate", (according to Kate's obituary). His second wife was Kate Perry (Lewis), born 1854 or 1857 and died 1912. She is buried in Westview Cemetery in Walhalla, SC., (from Oconee Co, SC, Cemetery Index Card). They were only married a short time before Richard's death and they had no children.
