Capt. Daniel Brown Clark was born on January 4, 1819, in Batavia, New York, the child of Eli K. and Eunice Brown. He had five sons, four daughters, and one infant child with Eleanor Bates between 1840 and 1863. He died on October 1, 1897, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, having lived a long life of 78 years. Dan was a member of the Broadway Methodist Episcopal Church, in Council Bluffs. He is listed as a prominent early settler of Pottawattamie county with a large land holding and an interesting article in the Biographical History of Pottawattamie County, published in 1891.

In the Civil War, Dan enlisted as a Captain at the age of 42. Commission in Company H, 15th Infantry Regiment Iowa on December 13, 1861. He resigned Company H, 15th Infantry Regiment Iowa on June 7, 1862 at Corinth, MS. Dan's brothers Atlyn, Arista, and Ora were also soliders in the Civil War, as was his Son, Edwin.

Interestingly, John Danielson became captain after Dan resigned and John's daughters, Abigail and Alice married Dan's sons Ora and Sam Clark.
