Borghild Josefa Olsen was the first child of Govert Hilde Olsen and his first wife, Solveig Emelie Stiansen. She was born at Søbodvig, a small hamlet near Mandal on the southern tip of Norway. She had one brother, Einar, before her mother died in 1906. Her father married Amalia Stallesdatter Opsal and 6 more children were born to the family. Borghild emigrated with much of her family in 1915, arriving in New York on the ship Frederik VIII on 27 Oct. Sometime between 1915 and 1937 Borghild changed her name from Olsen to Behrents, the surname that many members of her family adopted. She became a naturalized citizen 10 Feb 1937 in Chicago.
