Alice E. Hovind, age 87, of Menomonie, WI passed away Saturday, May 23, at the Dunn County Health Care Center in Menomonie WI.
Alice Evelyn Behrents was born December 22, 1921, in the Town of Menomonie, Dunn County, WI to Govert and Amalia (Opsal) Behrents. She grew up in the Menomonie area and attended Menomonie High School. Alice married Arnold Hovind on June 9, 1939 in Menomonie. She worked as a homemaker and cashier, as well as volunteering her time at St. John's Hospital in St. Paul, after moving their family to St. Paul. In 1978 they moved back to their hometown of Menomonie and settled in Cedar Falls.
Alice was a member of Eastern Star in St. Paul for many years. She was also a member of Women of Moose 682 and the Methodist Churches in Menomonie and Tainter. After her husband retired, they spent 20 years going to Tucson, AZ, for the winters where they spent time hiking, making jewelry, afghans, stained glass, baskets, and many other craft projects. They also traveled all over the U.S. with their family and enjoyed visiting Hawaii. She was loved by her family and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Alice is survived by a son, Gary (Ruby) Hovind of Menomonie, a daughter, Shirley (Jim) Neikirk of Menomonie, four grandchildren, Paul (Vicki) Hovind of San Diego, CA, Ken (Monica) Hovind of Middleton, WI, Jon (Carolyn) Neikirk of Wauwatosa, WI, Elizabeth (Paul) Moore of West Bend, WI, eight great-grand children, Roxy Pikrel, Alex, Ryan, and Zach Hovind, Connor and Amanda Neikirk, and Amalia and Alicia Moore, brothers-in-law, Marlyn Hovind of Houston TX, Ted Olechno of Menomonie, sister-in-law, Lorraine Behrents of Menomonie. Many nephews & nieces and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Arnold, her parents, Govert and Amalia Behrents, her brothers Einar and Norman Behrents and her sisters, Borghild Espeland, Olga Thorud, Gerda Hall, Jennie Kistner and Helen Olechno.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, May 29, 2009 at Tainter Methodist Church in Twp. Tainter, Dunn County with Pastor Don Gribble officiating. Friends and family are welcome at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie, WI, from 4 to 8 PM Thursday, May 28th and 1 hour prior to the service at the church. There will be a Women of the Moose Service at 7 PM on Thursday May 28th at Olson Funeral Home. Interment will be at Cedar Falls Cemetery.
