Louis' exact birth date is unknown, but records show he was born in Constable, Franklin County, New York. He was the 2nd of 9 known children of Francois Xavier Poirier aka Peach and Cleophee Clara Patenaude. He was a Civil War Vet, Union Private, New York State Infantry, Co. A, Division 98. He suffered severe wounds on his right hand in the Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia which left it severely mangled with limited use. Louis' Civil War Pension papers records their marriage by a Protestant minister on 13 November 1869 with the Catholic Marriage Blessing on the 24th November 1869 in Notre Dame Church, Malone, Franklin County, New York. He and Amelia raised their 12 known children in Constable, New York and by 1900 they had moved to Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts following other family members who moved there for work opportunities. By 1905 they were back living in Constable, New York until their deaths.
