Note: Mary came from a religious stock and raised all her family to be good Christians.Wisconsin Free Press Oconomowoc, Wisconsin Saturday, February 13, 1892 Mrs. Joseph Armitage died at the home of her youngest daughter,Mrs. Frank Tremain, in the town of Oconomowoc. The deceased,whose maiden name was Mary Sykes, was born in Heckmondwole.Yorkshire, England on October 26, 1809, and was married to
Joseph Armitage, June 21, 1830. They came to America in April,1842 and lived in the Eastern states until the year 1846, when they came to Wisconsin, arriving in the town of Hustisford on Christmas day. They purchased a farm at Neosho, Dodge Co., andremained on it until March 1885, when they moved to the city of Oconomowoc, remaining there until April, 1890, when on accountof failing health, they went to live with their daughter.Mrs. Armitage was the mother of eleven children, nine boys and two girls, seven of whom are still living, to wit: Thomas,Sykes, Phebe, Joseph, Robert, Willis, and Fannie. There are 42 living grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She was afaithful wife and kind and loving mother. Funeral services were held from the residence Thursday afternoon, by Rev. E.Duckworth and the remains were interned in La Belle Cemetery.

Note: Father Thomas disapproved of their marriage and wouldn't communicate for several years. Neither would Mary name a child for him until he made friends. Joseph and Mary emigrated to US in 1842 via the "Siddons" from Liverpool to NY. He worked in cotton mills (as he had in England) in NJ, RI, & MA before settling on a farm near Neosho, WI. in 1846.
