Note: Thomas was a Seventh Day Adventist.His death was due to Heart Trouble,and Brights Disease. Thomas took sick while traveling with his daughter Ida to visit his two children who lived in Colorado.Thomas Armitage was born near Hyde, England, October 5, 1836 and died January 2, 1911, making him at the time of his death, 74years, 2 months and 27 days old. At the age of 5 years he with his parents came to America, residing for a short time in the Eastern states, after which they moved to Wisconsin, which was then almost a wilderness. At the age of 22 years he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jane Strait at Neosho, Dodge County,WI. Eight children were born of this union, seven of whom are living. Albert E. Seymour, WI., Thomas M. of Montrose, Co.,Robert J. of Chattonooga,Okla, William M. of Berry N.D., Mrs.Jennie May Gaylor of Caledonia, Michigan, Jessie S. of Iron River, Michigan, Ida Pearl of Lamar, CO.Two Years after his marriage he accepted the views held by S.D.Adventists of which he was a firm believer until his death...He was among the first volunteers in the Civil War, serving in the Army three years. In 1878 with his family he moved to Michigan, locating in Alligan, a place he made his future home.During the holidays he with his daughter, Mrs. Galylor, started for Colorado to visit his two children residing there, while enroute he was taken ill and arrived in Lamar, the home of his daughter Ida, in a unconscious condition. Two days later he passed away, regaining consciousness only for a short time.His death being due to heart trouble, of which he has suffered for several years. Mrs. Gaylor left for home on No. !2 yesterday, taking his remains to be placed in their last resting place by the side of his companion who preceded him in death sixteen years.Thomas was the first to volunteer for the Civil War. Company D. 8th Infantry.Enlisted 26-Sept-1861 from Hustisford, WI.Mustered out of the service 16-Sept-1864,His term had expired.In 1878 with his family, he moved to Michigan locating in Alligan County. He and his wife are both buried in Polar Hills Cemetery in Monterey, Alligan County, Michigan.
