Born the 10th of 10 children to Fred Bartels and Maria nee Petau and grew up in Grand Island, Nebraska. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church on 5 Apr 1914; the name on church records is Heinrich Ludwig Wilhelm Bartels. He married Effie Ilene Marquis in Grand Island, Nebraska on January 15, 1921 at Trinity Lutheran Church. They had one son, Roderick Henry (1930-2000). He worked for the railroad and had lived in Casper, Wyoming and was transferred to Alhambra, California. Henry suffered a heart attack and died at Palm Springs, having gone there on a golfing vacation. At death, he was survived by his wife Effie, son Roderick, and four grandchildren.
