Martha was the 6th of 10 children born to Fred and Maria (Petau) Bartels. Her parents relocated from Saline County, Nebraska where they had been farming to Grand Island, Nebraska when she was about 10 years old. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church, and this is where Martha was confirmed on 23 Mar 1902. She was still a teen-ager when she married Herman Koch, also of Grand Island; they had one son, "Dee". They ran a cafe in Grand Island for awhile, and then turned their large home on East 6th Street into a boarding home which both Martha and Herman ran.
