Hannah Sofia Berg was born August 7, 1901, the youngest child of Hans and Severine Berg. She received her early schooling in the Climax schools. On October 10, 1926, she married Helmer Bangen and they lived on the old Bangen place for ten years. All of their children except Rodger were born there. In 1936, they purchased the Berg farm where Hannah had grown up. They continued to live in that throughout their lives.

Helmer and Hannah farmed, raising mostly small grains. They also kept a number of cattle and horses. Most farmers kept cattle at that time as there was a lot of wasteland along the river that couldn't be farmed. Helmer passed away in 1971 after a lingering illness. Helmer had three daughters with his first wife (Laura—a sister of Hannah's): Mildred, Ruby and Fylies. Helmer and Hannah had five children: Harold, Orlean, Irvin, Arlone and Rodger.
