Lura Helsley Rogers was my maternal grandmother, of whom I only have the vaguest recollections. She was born in Millville, Ray County, MO, 25 Jun 1878. The first child of Joseph Gilbert and Harriet A. "Hattie" Johnson Helsley. They migrated to Duarte (El Monte Township) Los Angeles County, CA between 1884 - 1887. Lura m. John C. Rogers in Los Angeles County 24 Oct 1900. They had 3 sons and a daughter (see obit below). They lived in Duarte, San Fernando, then moved up to Tulare and settled in Kern County in 1916 on a farm outside of what is now Wasco, CA. Her siblings: Alma H. Partridge, Cara H. Peters, Cala H. Bosserdet, Harry Helsley all lived in or near this community during the 19-teens, thru 1950s. She was a Charter Member of the First Congregational Church in Wasco. She and my grandfather were "abstainers of drink." She was described to me by a long time neighbor and several friends as a "real lady, kind and generous." The following is her obit: "Rogers, Lura -- Funeral services for Mrs. Lura Rogers, 71, a resident of Wasco for the past 33 years, will be held ...Wasco. Mrs. Rogers died Thursday night in Casmalia, where she had been living since early summer. The Reverend Elmer Windiach of the First Congregational Church, Wasco, will officiate at the sevices.
