Born abt 1861 in Payson, Adams County, IL, the eighth child, third daughter of John Crain Johnson and Sarah Peterie Johnson. By 1868 the family had moved to Missouri, where the family was living in Williams Township, Benton County per the US Census of 1870. Missouri marriage records show she married at "Lincoln, Sept. 8, 1877: Joseph Helsley of Pettis Co. Mo. and Miss Hattie Johnson of Williams [township] Mo., Benton Co., Mo. A. C. Chapman Filed Sept 11, 1877." In 1880 census she resided in Lincoln, Caldwell, MO, was married to Joseph Gilbert HELSLEY, born abt. 1851, Ohio. Fred Helsley, Joseph's brother, born abt 1860 is also a member of their household. Joseph and Hattie had Lura b1878, Alma b.1881; Cara b1884 all born in MO; Between 1884 and 1887 they moved, by train, to El Monte Township (Duarte), Los Angeles, CA. They had the following children in CA: Cala b1888, Infant son 1 d1890, Harry b1891; Geraldine b1896, Infant son 3 d1900. She resided in Duarte until her husband's death. About 1920 Hattie moved in with her eldest daughter Lura Helsley Rogers and family in Wasco. She died there 11 Oct 1927. She was buried in Duarte in the family Plot at Live Oak Memorial Park 13 Oct 1927.
