Cara Helsley was born 14 February 1884, the third daughter to Joseph Gilbert and Harriet "Hattie" Amelia Helsley, in Millville, Ray County, Missouri. Before she was four years old the family migrated to the Duarte area of El Monte Township, Los Angeles County, California. She married Thomas E. "Pete" Peters, 10 June 1903, in Duarte, Los Angeles County. He was age 34 and she was 19. Their first child, a son, Lewis Edwin was born 13 March 1904. In the 1910 Census, they resided at 655 Juniper Ave, Long Beach, Ward 1, Los Angeles County, and they had 3 little boys. Between 1915 and 1919 the family moved to Shafter, Kern County. Three of her sisters and her brother were residing near Shafter at this time. Her husband died 26 December 1926, age 58. She was a widow, 42, with five children 11 and under. In the early 1930's she moved back to Long Beach but returned to Wasco, Kern County, before the 1940 Census. One of my memories of her is the little electric "car" (more like an old fashioned golf cart) that she drove around town to deliver the greeting cards she sold. Her niece, Alice Vera Rogers Vandegrift, was very fond of her. She was known as Aunt Carrie to us. After she had a stroke, she lived with one of her daughters in Bakersfield. She eventually had to be moved to a nursing home. She died 27 July 1960.
