Alice Vera Rogers was the fourth child and only daughter born to John Calhoun and Lura Helsley Rogers in San Fernando, Los Angeles Co, CA. She was named after her father's sister Alice. In the 1910 US Census they were living in San Fernando, Los Angeles Co., CA, but she wasn't born until October so not listed with her family. She moved with her family to Tulare and eventually to Kern Co outside what is now Wasco near Bakersfield. Her father loved to fish and in the summer time several families would go up into the foothills along the Kern River and pitch camp. She married James "Shorty" Worley in 1928. He worked in the oilfields. They lived in Bakersfield and Taft. They had two children, She divorced Shorty in the mid-1930s. She married Bart Frank Trew about 1937 or 38. Frank worked in the oilfields and then drove bulldozers for road and dam construction. They lived in Taft, Wasco, Camarillo and San Luis Obispo, CA. They had four children of which I am one. And there was always room for one or more when needed. At three different times in my life I remember other children living with us. The same went for meals especially Sunday dinner, suppers or whenever she made soup and cornbread. A place(s) were always added if someone showed up at mealtime. I have heard it said more than once that Alice could put a full meal on the table when the cupboard looked bare to anyone else. They owned two houses and a garden lot on "F" Street in Wasco. They moved to San Luis Obispo County in 1954. Where they rented houses on four different farms south of the airport. Alice divorced Frank in 1960. She lived for a time with her eldest son in Redlands, San Bernardino Co and then rented a house in Lancaster, Los Angeles Co, near her eldest daughter, before moving back to San Luis Obispo town where she lived with her second son. She married again in April 1965, Glenn W. "Van" Vandegrift was self employed as a carpet layer. She met him while working at a boarding house owned by a neighbor. She was a charter member and an active member in her church, The United Church of Christ. She died at Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo 5 Jun 1971. Services were held at The UCC on Los Osos Rd. At her request she was cremated and her ashes scattered over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Cayucos, San Luis Obispo County. At the time of her death she was survived by her husband Van; two of her brothers Joseph and wife Thelma Rogers of Atascadero and Howard Rogers of Granite Station, California; a step-daughter Naomi Trew Farris of Athens TN; her six children [All six of her children are living as of August 2012]; 13 grandchildren; two nieces, Helen Cowan of Long Beach and Bonnie Poole of Atascadero; and two nephews Bill and Melissa Rogers, and Jack and [Living] Rogers all of Wasco.
