Anchorage Daily News (AK) - Friday, June 26, 1998
Longtime Butte resident Mary Benbow, 72, died peacefully in her sleep June 20, 1998, at home.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Palmer Highway Church of God, 349 E. Arctic, Palmer, AK. The Rev. Steve Reem will officiate. Following the service there will be food and fellowship at the church and also an Italian celebration later at home.
Ms. Benbow was born Oct. 20, 1925, in Mishawaka, IN., to immigrant parents Dominic and Christine (Michele) Becchelli.
She married Cecil Quier at the age of 17. They had four children while living in Indiana. Later, the family moved to Freemont, Calif., where her fifth child was born.
In 1966, she and her family moved to Alaska, making their home in the Butte area where she has lived ever since.
She had many jobs through her life from farming, wife, mother, dance teacher, painting and logging in the Butte area in the late '60s for Barnhart's Mill, to being self-employed at home with Mary's Upholstery in the '70s and '80s.
According to her family, ''Mary was a fun-loving, caring, energetic and multi-talented mother and friend. She was small in stature but full of life. (She will be) remembered by many as 'simply good people,' helping anyone needing it and as one who would root for the underdog. Growing tired of this life, she many times stated, 'I'm ready to go live with Jesus Christ.' ''
Ms. Benbow is survived by her older brother, Mike Becchelli of South Bend, IN.; her children, Cecil Quier of Lake Stevens, WA., Michael Quier of Freemont, CA., Chris Purvis of Anchorage, Joseph Quier of Brighton, CO., and Scott Quier of Palmer; many grandchildren including local residents Shawn LaRose, Sonya Ingrim, Sara Quier and Sandi Quier; and many great-grandchildren, including local resident Devin Corey.
In lieu of flowers for the service, the family requests that memorial donations of ornamental flowers and trees be sent to the Palmer Highway Church of God, 349 E. Arctic, Palmer, Alaska 99645, to aid with their landscaping project.
Arrangements were made by Kehl's Palmer Mortuary.
