Elizabeth Massengale Cross,90, of the Smokey Creek community, passed away early Tuesday morning, June 27, 1989, at the Scott County Hospital following a lingering illness. She was the daughter of the late Franklin Massengale and the late Mary Jane Bunch Massengale and was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Cross; one daughter, Nevada Lowe; one son, Bratcher Cross; three sisters; Luella Bunch, Dora Carroll, and Vianna Carroll; and three brothers; Esau, Elmer, and McKinley Massengale. She was a member of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Cross is survived by five daughters; Pearl Owens and husband, Walter of Oneida, Canzada Owens of Miamisburg O, Zora Burress and husband, Ted of Miamisburg, O., Nora Ward of Smokey Junction, and Evelyn Lowe and husband, Lawrence of Knoxville; three sons, Ovia Cross and wife Janis of the Capital Hill community, Odell Cross and wife, Ruth of Smokey Junction and Arnold Cross and wife, Ruth of Nashville; four sisters, Sylvania Harness, Celia Cross, Lucie Hembree, and Linda Lowe all of the Smokey Creek community; two brothers, Laford Massengale of the Straight Fork community and Levi Massengale of Petros; twenty-two grandchildren; twenty five great grandchildren five great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the West-Murley Funeral Home chapel at 1 p.m. Friday, June 30, with Rev. Hayes Ross officiating. The Mason Family and the Massengale Family sang. Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery in Smokey Junction. West-Murley Funeral Home in Oneida was in charge of the arrangements. (Source: The Scott County News, 6 Jul, 1989, p12)
